1. When was the first time you heard about Darwin Nunez?
The first time I laid eyes on Darwin was in 2019 when he played for Uruguay U20 in the South American youth championship. He missed many chances and generated many doubts about his capabilities. A few months later, playing in the U20 World Cup, he showed his true face. Since then he has kept developing and developing.
2. When did he make his first apperance in the national team?
He debuted for Uruguay in October 2019, and managed to score a few minutes after coming off from the bench. It was a good header vs. Peru.
3. What is his role in the national team today?
Nowadays, he is gaining more prominence in the national team as Suarez and Cavani are slowing down. He´s still not the main man, but it seem like only a matter of time.
4. How do you think he has developed since he got in to the squad?
He is getting more familiar in the team, but he´s still finding his best place. Like with Cavani back in the day, it takes time for strikers to find their place in Uruguay as the expectations are high taking in mind the predecessors.
5. Nunez has been compared to Edison Cavani in a few stories this week, do you think they are similar as players or do Nunez have more in common with any other player?
Cavani and Darwin are both strong and quick but stylistically are quite different. Darwin is unorthodox and a less allround footballer than Cavani, although he could obviously develop this aspect. Both have good movement and like to run in behind through the channels.
6. Youve had many great strikers in Europe, do you think Nunez will follow in the steps of Suarez, Cavani, Forlan etc?
Darwin has everything to follow his idols. To reach their levels, certainly that of Suarez, will be hard but he proven to surprise people with his incredible development
