Tidigare år har Middlesbroughs ordförande Steve Gibson insisterat att lagets stjärna Stewart Downing inte är till salu.

I den senaste intervjun som Gibson har gjort i media låter det annorlunda: ”We had an unspoken agreement that if the right club came in, and I believe Stewart is a top-four club player, then we wouldn’t stand in his way. It’s a short career,” sa Gibson.

”There comes a point where a player must sit down and, without emotion, make a decision about their career.

”He has five or six years left at the top. Can I offer him European football? No. Does he deserve European football? In my opinion, yes.”

Dessvärre lär det inte bli någon övergång till top4-klubb för Downing i sommar. De senaste rapporterna om hans skada hävdar att det kommer att ta 4-6 månader innan han är tillbaka på allvar.
